Was there existentialism in the TV series "La Femme Nikita?"?

Tommy

I am taking a course in philosophy in popular culture. The instructor insists that there is actually considerable existentialism in "La Femme Nikita," and in other noir and neo-noir works, but I don't get it. Can you help me out?

Answer
I think so.

If I remember correctly, she was a hooker or vagrant who had no recorded history so she could work undercover for a secret government agency. This idea of having no history and being in a state of freedom to become yourself are themes in existentialist philosophy.

Existentialism is the idea that human existence is of _becoming_, and not _being_ which had been the focus of ontology since Plato. We are free to realize our authentic selves, in the now. We are not defined by history, genetics, society, and other aspects of our "facticity" because we are isolated and free agents.

The Nikita character has no history and is free to define herself in whatever undercover role she is put in.

The anachronistic pastiche and general critique of structuralism and modernity common in Noir films and books are also features of existential and mostpodern thought.
