Referencing the TV series House M.D. season 1, episode: Three Stories, Stacy says to House that "the pain alone" will kill him, and House acknowledges this as if a medical fact he already knows. Of course a lot of things on House are implied, so it never comes out as a medical declaration, but I was wondering if that's possible. Please do not reply with a definite "no", based simply on never having heard of it happening. Replying instead with "I've never seen this happen", so fact and experience can be differentiated.

Edit: It's obvious from the first response that people are ignorant of 1. my condition of response, and 2. scientific thought in general.
To clarify, simply refers pain being the sole antecedant cause of death (e.g. you can get shot and experience high intensities of pain, but you're more likely to die from the bullet wound, and therefore the pain is not the sole cause).
In response to an answer posted, continuous misfirings in the nervous system can cause tremendous pain independant of any other cause. The effects of the interpretations of those signals is what I'm looking for (e.g. brain shuts off indefinitely, cardiac arrest in response, etc.)

Answer
Yes, it is possible for acute pain to lead to death... Acute pain can cause the body to go into shock and lead to cardiac arrest.

Acute pain can also cause unconsciousness and result in death from lack of oxygen.

I am aware of this from something that happened to me. I woke up during a foot surgery on BOTH of my feet. The ortho equipment broke down while inside my right foot so they had to call in a technician to come fix it. It took so long that the first anesthesiologist was replaced by the next shift - and that guy didn't follow up on making sure I had pain meds or was still under!

Anyway, I woke up from the pain while they were closing up, I wimpered a couple of times then made one scream, inhaled, ...after that, I couldn't breathe. It was like I could only breathe in but not out. The nurses kept slapping my face and yelling "you have to breathe...." then, they shoved a tube down my throat and scrambled to get the crash cart. Then they gave me a shot of something to make me breathe-- the whole time still in pain. I am SURE I would have died without that intervention.

what song does Dr House use as his cell phone ringtone in the season 5?
